I was going to write about my own personal experience with being stalked, but it was pointed out to me that my stalker(s) are still out there. Shuckus.
You have the right to withold any real life information (unless ordering online) that can be used to hurt you.
You have the right to assume any fake ID (age, sex, race, shoe size, etc.) about yourself as long as it cannot be mistaken for a real person. For instance, don't go online as your neigbor's name and tell people what town you live in. Even if you make up a fake name, there might actually be a person by that name in the city or town you give. If you get harassed about this shite, ignore them and go on about your business.
No matter how close you want to get with that cool person in chat, you must abide by your fake identity. Especially abide by this if you live with someone else, there are kooks online that will take it offline and into "real" life.
If you fuck up and give your identity there's not much you can do to take it back. Just make sure not to order anything online for a while after. Amazon and cheap hardware are the only reasons to order anything online anyway.
More about that harassing part. If you do get harassed or cyberstalked and you can't fight them back yourself you might as well give them over to the man (read FBI). There are also groups out there that will do the job for you in the illegal sense, but you won't have wallets nor pockets after they get through with you. Also they may just turn around and fuck you.
Know your rights, because a lot of the things that are illegal offline are becoming illegal online. Don't let these kooks screw with you til' you no longer can enjoy yourself online. One of the things that are stressed in the articles about cyberstalking is that sooner or later it goes offline and into your home or your work place. Those are the ones you want to give to the man!

That cyberstalking even exists proves that most people cannot and will not be decent without some form of governing body. It's kind of sad because the Internet is/was so much more than a bunch of Jerry Springer kooks out to get their jollies by bringing their filth online. Damn I sound like a church-lady! Be safe and take no shite from these miscreants.
